  1. UPDATE/CORRECTION: The Sage/Breville tank issue might be my fault. A wise person in the comments suggested it was because I wasn't using the water filter that sits in the tank (because I don't need it). This would explain the missing volume, I think. I'll try and test it again soon. I regret the error.

ADDITIONAL: Mark from Ratio comments: "James! Thank you for this detailed overview. The Ratio Six lid you have is defective, as you so gloriously captured on film. We’re contacting you to arrange a replacement, and anyone who is experiencing this issue can get a free replacement here: https://ratiocoffee.com/six-lid

    Very sorry for the trouble!

With continuous improvement in mind, we're working on the next generation of the Ratio Six thermal carafe and heat shield, with a planned released in 2022. Timelines for making physical objects are much longer than we’d like these days…

We just got word that the Ratio Six will soon have official SCA Gold Cup certification, and we do believe that our showerhead + heat shield combined with the built in “Bloom” phase work together to make the Six a very capable and consistent brewer, with very high extractions possible.

We look forward to continuing to learn from the coffee community. ❤️"

  2. It must be nice to be so well off that investing this kind of money, angst, and passion in making coffee has this much importance.

  3. My parents asked me to pick out a new coffee maker because I’m the “weird coffee person” in the family and their Walmart coffee maker kept overflowing the brew basket for 10 or more cups.

I let my mom pick between the Oxo and Cuisinart Perfectemp and she decided on the Oxo. We’ve used it 8 times already. So far we’ve used preground Don Francisco, preground Folgers, and Stumptown Hairbender that I ground in a Virtuoso.

So far it’s awesome and they love it. They love the auto-on, and I loved the taste/extraction we got out of all three coffees we’ve brewed. Yes, even the Folgers tasted good when brewed in there.

I would highly recommend the Oxo to anyone who’s considering it.

  4. I have a Moccamaster and it'll give me almost two liters of good drip coffee in not a lot of time, I like the single switch. I use it to fill airpots for groups.
I'd be interested to hear your opinion of Bunn brewers sized for 1gal (3.8L) airpots.
My main gripe with the brewers is plastic in the hot path, I want to have less of that.

  5. Thanks James, for this exciting overview! Does it make sense to use preheated water in the Mokkamaster? I´ve been using this machine for 2 years but was wondering if that makes any difference?

  9. My brewer has two sets of markings on the glass carafe. One for water level for filling and one for coffee. They match exactly on the first several brews I have done. The standard setting is kind of an "average" extraction, but it does a very even spray from the shower head over the coffee. With the "strength" feature engaged, I get a very high extraction. Close to max in my opinion. Being that this pot costs a third of the price of my last one which was very basic (Brew on button, stopper to take a cup during the brew without spilling, and a program brewing function), has more features (reusable mesh filter, Strength adjustment, stopped to allow me to take a cup in the middle of the brew, really quick climb to the max water temperature, better water distribution, and higher extraction) than the old one did and gives me better tasting full flavored coffee. I'm quite pleased and lucky to have stumbled across this sale on a "budget" machine at the local Business Costco store. Things I do to make it a little better also are…I use paper filters instead of the mesh one, slightly dampen the filter beforehand, and I also don't put the carafe under right away when it first starts to let the coffee bloom a bit extra.

Just saying all of this to tell others that you can get a very good brew from budget coffee makers. Make sure to do your research before buying. Also helps if you purchase from a store that has a really good return policy. Places like Costco in the US will take it back no questions asked for any number of reasons, including if I didn't like the quality of brew.

  10. My wife has gone through 2 oxo brewers in the past 3 years. The first one leaked and drained on its own and had to be replaced. Her 2nd one now has started to leak after two years and will no longer descale (seriously though it won’t even go to the setting to allow it to happen)

  11. I have a Moccamster …. I love it, Fast brew … it's simple … on/off. I've had the coffee brewers with timers and built in grinders and it's a feature that I have maybe used a few times but never worth the time to reprogram every time the power goes out or or daylight savings time kicks in.
The pour quality is my biggest complaint for every brewer I have ever had. You begin to wonder if any of these manufacturers have ever poured a cup of coffee from their product.
It's the one thing the customer interacts with every time they have a coffee and it has never been a good experience … ever.

  12. I have the ratio6. I hate hate hate the carafe for all the same reasons you've demonstrated here. The top is awful and the coffee doesn't stay hot. It does make very good coffee and its a very pretty coffeemaker. So im looking for a better one. Looking at the reviews but im so glad you said it. The carafe and that top have to go and pulling it out is awkward and then having to reassemble it. Im hoping they fix whats wrong with it. Its expensive and should be a better unit. Maybe ill try the ratio8…

  13. I'm a little late, here, and this will be long, but I'd like to chime in with my experience with the Brazen. I was looking for a good drip brewer about 6.5 years ago, now. I eventually came to either the Moccamaster or the Brazen. The Brazen has more features, and adjustability, at a significantly lower price, so for that reason, I chose the Brazen.
It made great coffee. It still makes great coffee. The carafe was horrible. It would not keep coffee hot, at all. I did my own testing, because I thought it couldn't possibly meet the requirements for its SCA certification. Well, if I turned up the temperature slightly, brewed a full carafe, and then didn't pour anything out of it, it just barely squeaked by on temperature retention. Pour a cup, and it all fell apart. I still thought there was a problem with my carafe, so I contacted Behmor, described the problem, and asked if I might have received a faulty carafe. They replied that there was nothing wrong with my carafe, it meets specifications, and Mr. Coffee has been using that carafe for years without any problem. Mr. Coffee? Seriously? We went back and forth a couple times, but they absolutely refused to acknowledge the possibility that the carafe was faulty. I was prepared to purchase the carafe, but they wouldn't even give me that option. I see now, that you can buy parts, but I don't recall being able to find them at the time.., and you know, for 6 years of looking, I never found a matching Mr. Coffee carafe.
I found myself obsessively preheating the carafe, every morning, as long as possible, to the point that I would sometimes forget to empty it and place it under the basket, which resulted in many overflows, and coffee all over my counter, and my floor.
I cursed this coffee maker for 6 years, before I finally purchased the Moccamaster that I had almost purchased instead, years ago. The design of the Moccamaster carafe's top is a little weird, and could be improved, but it does splash less than the Brazen. But you know what what? It keeps my brewed coffee hot for quite a while. I can now pour a second cup without having to microwave it, so as not to drink cold coffee.
I love my Moccamaster, that I have been using for the last 6 months. There is no way I will ever purchase another Behmor product. Are all their Mr. Coffee carafes as bad as mine was? I have no idea, but after that customer service experience, I'll never come back.

  15. I’d like to see how these stack up against the “regular” coffee makers you’d get at target or Walmart or ASDA. I’d assume longevity is a factor but my mother has been using her Proctor-Silex every day for at least fifteen years.

  16. Great video. Considering one of these to replace my current Wilfa which I have loved but for the heating plate underneath the carafe which steadily has completely rusted out 😮
Should really have contacted wilfa about it as soon as it began happening but the coffee quality was great so I just left it (different model to the one in this video).

Wondering if the mochamaster is just the easiest replacement option given it’s longstanding reliability / warranty and also is readily available off the shelf here in Australia.

  17. The carafe on the Breville/Sage annoys the hell out of me. The lid and carafe itself are extremely hard to clean and get all of the coffee out of, to the extent that I am deterred from using it. If I purchased a new one, ease of cleaning would be one of my top priorities.

  19. Behmor owner here since 2018. Overall pretty happy with it, the coffee always brews well. I use filters in the basket though as the mesh doesn't fully remove all sediments. The carafe is a pain to clean out, and it's inner seal is starting to wear out. Still, it's the best automatic I've owned bar none. The temperature control and pre soak features for the price make it worth it.

  21. I’ve given up on automatic brewers. They all break and clog and are just not worth the bother in my opinion. I heat up the water and pour into a Melittta cone. No fuss, easy cleaning and with a little practice you can get very consistent results

  25. This video was very helpful. I generally use a V60 to brew my coffee every morning and was looking to get something more “automatic”. I was leaning towards the Moccamaster, but after watching this I think I’ll go the Behmor.

  30. I'd like to know how easy each of these is to clean including the carafe. Also does the carafe lid detach from the carafe or is it fixed. I'm not a gear head and don't like fiddling with things for the fun of it so for me the best coffee makes good coffee and is also easy to use and easy to clean.

I do have one follow-up fr the Ratio brewer. I see now that they sell it with just the carafe (similar in look to a Chemex) not the messy contraption like before. Would this change your review? Or would you recommend it more since it would make it more user friendly? (I believe)

  34. Years ago, I had an electric drip coffee maker that I liked very much (Braun or Krups). It distributed the hot water through the grounds at multiple points, resulting in a very tasty brew. It eventually died because the proximity of water/steam to electronics is not a good thing. As I researched potential replacements, I concluded that these machines were problematic because 1) the water/steam vs. electronics problem and 2) over time, the heating elements stopped delivering water at a high enough temperature to make great coffee. I settled on a mostly manual approach. I boil water on the stove, so the water is always hot enough. I use a $100 Capresso Infinity Plus burr grinder and pour the ground coffee into a Melitta cone with a paper filter. The coffee drips into Zojirushi 1 liter thermal carafe with a pistol grip. Works for me.
